After working and hitchhiking around Australia for 2 years, he bought a bike and spent 3 months cycling around New Zealand.  He then cycled back to his home in England starting in Papua New Guinea where he came down with Dengue fever and was chased by men wielding machetes.  After working 16 months in England, the cycling adventure continued through Northern Europe before riding south into the Balkans.  In December 2018 he rode into the Middle East and onward into North Africa.  Currently in Tanzania, he is just over halfway to his goal of cycling 100,000 km through 100 countries on 6 continents.  Part of his adventure is to raise funds for Build Africa, a UK charity working to fight poverty in Kenya and Uganda by using education to combat inequality.  You can learn more about his adventures at his website tristanridley.com.  Tristan Ridley, welcome to The Pursuit Zone.

TPZ175: Cycling Around the World with Fredrika Ek

cycling around the world Fredrika Ek

She cycled away from her hometown of Sundsvall Sweden in the early spring of 2015 with the goal to cycle around the world and to experience foreign lands and cultures.  She wanted to overcome the personal challenges of riding into the ruthless headwinds, the freezing cold, the tormenting heat and be able to say in the end, “Girl.  You actually did it.”  But this bike ramble was also something bigger – a fundraiser in support of ActionAid, an organization defending the human rights of the world’s most vulnerable girls and woman.  After 33 months, 51,000 km, and 45 countries she accomplished her mission and you can learn more about it at thebikeramble.com.  Fredrika Ek, welcome to The Pursuit Zone.

TPZ156: Cycling in the South American Andes with Faye Shepherd

cycling south america

In October 2016 Faye Shepherd began a 6-month, 5,500-mile cycling adventure through Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.  Starting in La Paz with her teammate Anna McNuff, the two cycled south to Ushuaia on a mostly off-road route through the Andes.  With over 100,000 meters of elevation gain they cycled the equivalent height of Mt. Everest over 10 times while wild camping most of the journey.  As Faye writes in her blog I thought these facts and figures were going to be most important in terms of a ‘sense of accomplishment’, but they’re not. In fact, they seem wholly inconsequential against a backdrop of extraordinary experiences and memories that we have been fortunate enough to be able to create.”  You can learn more about Faye and her adventures at fayeshepherd.wordpress.com.  Faye Shepherd, welcome to The Pursuit Zone.

Anna McNuff previously appeared in episodes 40 and 97.
