TPZ198: Trekking across Madagascar with Chaz Powell

In August 2019, he began a 780 km trek across Madagascar.  Joined by three team members, the goal was to walk east to west along Madagascar’s longest river, the Mangoky.  The journey was 29 days through jungles and across mountain ranges while avoiding crocodiles and the threat of armed bandits.  Part of the adventure is to raise funds and awareness for the loss of wildlife and wild lands across Africa by working with the African Wildlife Foundation.  You can learn more about Chaz and his adventures at  Chaz Powell, welcome back to the show.

In February 2016, 25-year-old Ash Dykes became the first person to traverse the length of Madagascar through its interior. It was an adventure spanning 155 days and 1,600 miles during which Ash summited eight of the highest mountains on the island. Madagascar’s land area is roughly 2.5 times larger than the UK and provides plenty of challenges from thick jungle to crocodile infested river crossings to bandits, military conflicts and the opportunity to contract the deadliest strain of malaria. Ash partnered with the Lemur Conservation Network which works to help protect Lemurs and their habitat in Madagascar and you can learn more about Ash and his expeditions at Ash Dykes, welcome back to the show.
